"In my profession, I have met individuals, made deals and [established] contacts over a game of bid whist," says MacFarland. Last year, MacFarland played in a celebrity bid whist tournament at the San Diego Black Film Festival, where he ran a "Boston" (see sidebar). "Playing against [actor-director] Bill Duke, who bragged all night long about how good he was, was the highlight of the night," MacFarland laughs. But the chairman of the Black Film Festival believes their social meeting will result in some professional benefits as well. "He [Bill Duke] says he is going to spread the news [about the festival], and I think he is going to bring [a film] next year," MacFarland says. "He established what he felt were solid, more genuine relationships, and that was a result of playing bid whist with us."©, BLACK ENTERPRISE MAGAZINE New York, N.Y. All Rights Reserved

If you are ever in the D.C. area on a Friday night, and Bid Whist or Pinochle is on your mind, then The Metropolitan Whist & Pinochle Club is the place to be. This fine club has been around for over 20 years and is still going strong. They meet every Friday evening from 8pm-1am. Guests are welcome to attend and play (Except the 3rd Friday of each month which is held for member only meetings)
Imagine playing in the championship game of a national Bid Whist tournament. The opponents took the bid with a 6 uptown in hearts. You know you don’t have any set books in hearts, so you have to try to set them in their off suit. You have the Ace, Queen, and Jack of Diamonds. The question is, do you have the nerve to trash those diamonds figuring that there is no way the bidder could be holding diamonds. That was the dilemma Jeff of Atlanta had against a team from Pittsburgh in the 2006 D.C. Area Early Bird National Tournament. Jeff decided to throw off the Ace, Queen, and Jack of Diamonds, while the bidder played his trump. When it was time for the bidder to play his off suit, Jeff had a lowly 10 of clubs and was able to set the bidder. That courageous move won Jeff and his partner Greg the $1000 first place prize.

So it stands to reason that when the 2006 Bicycle Playing Cards Bid Whist Across America Tour came to the D.C. area in March, 2006, at least one of the four available 1st Place Prizes would be won by Sam & Troy or Rob & Reggie. But that’s why they play the games. Neither one of those teams finished 1st Place in any of the 4 tournaments held that D.C. weekend. In fact, the nearest area team to win were two sisters from Baltimore named Almaria & Tiffany, and they lived 50 miles away from D.C. The teams taking 1st place in the other 3 tournaments were Pevas & Fernando of North Carolina, Jeff & Greg of Atlanta, and Southfield Lou and Notorious B.I.D of Detroit.

It only goes to show you, that the favorites don’t always win in tournaments or games. Maybe my Washington Wizards will win the NBA Championship this season….NOT
