Imagine playing in the championship game of a national Bid Whist tournament. The opponents took the bid with a 6 uptown in hearts. You know you don’t have any set books in hearts, so you have to try to set them in their off suit. You have the Ace, Queen, and Jack of Diamonds. The question is, do you have the nerve to trash those diamonds figuring that there is no way the bidder could be holding diamonds. That was the dilemma Jeff of Atlanta had against a team from Pittsburgh in the 2006 D.C. Area Early Bird National Tournament. Jeff decided to throw off the Ace, Queen, and Jack of Diamonds, while the bidder played his trump. When it was time for the bidder to play his off suit, Jeff had a lowly 10 of clubs and was able to set the bidder. That courageous move won Jeff and his partner Greg the $1000 first place prize.
